Darley: Addio a Shamardal! Il campione aveva 18 anni... Ecco la sua eredità

Una pessima notizia per il mondo dell'allevamento ci arriva dal sito del Darley, che ha appena comunicato il decesso di uno degli stalloni più influenti degli ultimi anni.

Shamardal (Giant's Causeway), campione in corsa e "leading light" del roster del Darley da 10 anni, è stato addormentato dolcemente nella sua casa presso il Kildangan Stud in Irlanda, a causa di gravi problemi di salute che hanno reso necessaria l'eutanasia. Nato il 27 Marzo del 2002, aveva 18 anni. 

In corsa si è dimostrato subito fortissimo vincendo le prime tre corse della carriera tra Ayr (per 8 lunghezze), Goodwood nelle Vintage Stakes G2, ed ha chiuso la carriera dei 2 anni con una vittoria nelle Dewhurst Stakes G1 battendo Oratorio (Danehill). 

Nell'inverno del 2005 l'acquisto da parte di Godolphin ed il passaggio dalle mani di Mark Johnston a quelle di Saeed Bin Suroor. Fu portato in Dubai e a Nad Al Sheba la prima apparizione pubblica per i nuovi colori fu subito un flop nel UAE Derby G2 sulla sabbia. Quella è rimasta l'unica macchia di una carriera altrimenti perfetta. 

A Maggio dei 3 anni nel 2005 la vittoria nelle Poule D'Essai des Poulains G1, le Ghinee francesi, poi la vittoria nel Prix du Jockey Club G1 battendo Hurricane Run (poi vincitore di Arco e stallone) e infine la vittoria nelle St James Palace's Stakes G1, quell'anno a York per i lavori di rifacimento di Ascot per il Royal Meeting, G1 battendo Ad Valorem e ancora Oratorio.

In seguito fu ritirato in razza a causa di un infortunio ma ha chiuso praticamente da imbattuto la sua carriera in erba con 6 vittorie su 6 ed un bottino di oltre $1 milione vinto. Ma era nulla in confronto a quello che fece vedere in razza. 

Promosso come shuttler, la prima stagione vera l'ha fatta in Australia e della sua prima annata subito un molteplice vincitore di G1 come Faint Perfume come rappresentante. In Europa è stato leading first-season sire, ed ha prodotto di quella stagione il vincitore di G3 Shakespearean ed il G1 performer Zazou, che conosciamo anche in Italia.

In seguito si è distinto e ad oggi contiamo 25 rappresentanti di G1, che hanno vinto corse come Dewhurst, Eclipse, French Guineas (both 2,000 and 1,000), French Derby, Cheveley Park, EP Taylor, National Stakes and Racing Post Trophy, solo per nominarne alcune. 

Il miglior performer, forse, è quello che stavamo vivendo alla fine del 2019 con Pinatubo. Sei vittorie su 6 ed un rating Timeform di 134, il più alto degli ultimi 25 anni. Il suo secondo prodotto migliore è stato Blue Point, anche lui ritirato in razza. L'unico cavallo della storia ad aver vinto 3 sprint al Royal Ascot e solo il terzo in cento anni ad aver completato il double King’s Stand/ Diamond Jubilee nello stesso anno. Solo nel 2019 ha prodotto 3 cavalli di 2 anni fortissimi ed imbattuti come Pinatubo, Earthlight e Victor Ludorum.

Nel 2020 funzionava ad un tasso di monta privato, praticamente era disponibile solo per le fattrici dello Sceicco e per quelle dei suoi amici, ma il costo sarebbe stato non meno di €200,000. Aveva iniziato nel 2006 a €40,000, poi €20,000 nel 2010 e risalito fino a €70,000 dal 2015. Negli ultimi 5 anni appunto tasso privato. Dal punto di vista dell'allevamento quello più accreditato ad ereditare il suo ruolo in razza è certamente Lope De Vega funzionante nel 2020 per €100,000, ma nel 2011 funzionava a €15,000 e poi €12,000. Pensate che colpo.

Al momento in cui ve ne parliamo ha prodotto 234 Stakes Performers, 75 vincitori di Gruppo (25 a livello di G1) e 71 vincitori di Listed. Numeri impressionanti.
